He juggles a million stories without a single mistake, and Haroun grows up in a home with a song on his mother’s lips, and a story on his father's. One day, Haroun's fathers stories all dry up – he opens his mouth, and no stories come out. Can Haroun bring back his fathers tales? Written with Salman Rushdie's trademark wit and rich prose, this short slice of his classic children's tale Haroun and the Sea of Stories is a delight for all.

The main focus of this thesis is language. Four works by three authors -namely the two Alice books by Lewis Carroll, The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, and Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie- are studied from the perspective of a Bakhtinian understanding of language as a set of intertextual relationships. Bakhtinian dialogy is an important part of my theoretical framework. The dialogy works on the level of words, characters, authors and readers, opening up a conversation between the worlds of reality and fiction. All three authors take us on a journey into fictional realms to explore issues related to identity, naming, and iteration in texts. Each of them asks the reader's imaginative participation in the story, with the hope that the world can be transformed into a better place through the power of words.

"Salman Rushdie: A Postmodern Reading of His Major Works attempts a close textual analysis of Rushdie's five major novels: Midnight's Children, Shame, The Satanic Verses, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and The Moor's Last Sigh. It focuses on the manner in which Rushdie is a postmodern writer whose subject is the postcolonial moment and makes the point that unlike many other contemporary subcontinental authors writing in English, Rushdie recognizes that practicing identity politics leads to nativism and nationalism, categories he rejects because they merely invert the colonizer/colonized binary, leaving violent hierarchies intact. His impulse, instead, is to deconstruct the colonizer/colonized binary and in doing so attempt to clear a "new" postmodern space."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Salman Rushdie is perhaps the most important writer of the present time. His significant and controversial literary interventions in debates on post-colonial culture and contemporary South Asian Islam are matched by the contribution he has made to postmodern literature in the West (culminating in the award to him in 1993 of the twenty-fifth-anniversary Booker of Bookers prize). This collection of articles focuses on Rushdie's five novels. The context is set by the introduction, The Politics of Salman Rushdie's Fiction, which discusses the political stance of Rushdie's fiction, the various influences on his work, and the textual strategies and techniques he employs, for political expression and cultural critique. The postmodern/post-colonial interface, the carnivalesque, and satire are major themes treated here and in the articles that follow, which also provide diverse other perspectives on Rushdie's thought and method. A number of essays have been commissioned specially for this volume. An appendix listing selected writings by Rushdie and articles on the Satanic Verses Affair is followed by a comprehensive bibliography annotating critical studies of Rushdie's work.
